Aerial Telephone Line Placement and Safety
 
Course Description
This Hands-On course is designed for Telecom cable placing and power avoidance safety.

You will be taught how to set up cable attachments to poles while maintaining proper power clearances, how to place strand and self supporting cable, how to properly remove cable from a pole, proper clearances of road, alleyways and driveways and adjusting the sag in cables to get even spans.

Then you will be taught how to bond and ground the strand or cable to existing plant facilities.

In the safety portion of this course we will address bucket and pole top safety and rescue and additional power clearance and electrical safety rules, regulations, standards and best practices.

To make the most of this course, having access to a polepole yard, bucket truck and tools available, this course can be customized to the customers specific needs.
Students Will Learn
Target Audience
Anyone working on or around Aerial Telephone facilities in an outside plant environment.
Prerequisites
None. Basic Pole Climbing and Telephony experience is recommended.
Course Outline

Module 1: Safety Overview

-Describe the proper attitude toward safety in overhead line maintenance.

-Identify electrical hazards in overhead line maintenance.

-Identify structural hazards in overhead line maintenance.

-Describe storage procedures for equipment used in overhead line maintenance.

 

Module 2: Care and Use of Safety Equipment

 

-Identify safety equipment commonly used in overhead line maintenance.

-Describe the proper testing and maintenance procedures for safety equipment.

-Explain the proper use of safety equipment.

 

Module 3: Climbing Safety


-Explain how to store and inspect climbing equipment.

-Identify some of the most common hazards that may be found prior to climbing a pole.

 

Module 4: Electrical Hazards


-Identify types of circuits and voltage levels.

-Identify grounds and grounded equipment.

-Describe how to create a safe work area using insulating covers.

 

Module 5: Safety With Tools and Equipment

 


-Describe safe methods of using tools and equipment designed for overhead line maintenance.

 

Module 6: Pole Top Rescue


-Describe how to safely handle an electrical shock victim when he’s on a pole.

-Explain the correct way to tie a handline to an electrical shock victim.

-Describe how to safely lower an electrical shock victim from a pole.

 

Module 7: Bucket Truck Safety and Rescue

 

Module 8: Aerial Hardware Mounting


-Drilling and attaching bolts and clamps.

 

Module 9: Aerial Placing of Strand and Cable


-Aerial cable heights and clearances

-Placing aerial strand

-Bonding and grounding of aerial plant

-Placing cable and using aerial spinners

-Placing self support cable.

-Proper cable lashing.

-Removing Cable from the Pole.

 

Module 10: Tightening Clamps and Adjusting Clearances
